President Obama declared that the use of chemical weapons in Syria would be a “redline,” precipitating unspecified but severe consequences.  Now, faced with evidence that such use has taken place, Mr. Obama confronts the prospect that, to paraphrase Colin Powell, they broke it, we own it.

An even larger problem is looming.  The London Daily Telegraph reports that a battle is now raging near Aleppo for control of one of the Syrian government’s chemical weapons plants.  There is the distinct prospect that al Qaeda jihadists will prevail and acquire its deadly contents.

Unfortunately, short of forcibly occupying Syria, there is no sure way of preventing further use and proliferation of these weapons.  Lesser military options may simply provide additional pretexts for their use against us.  So, perhaps, will a violated redline.
