The Senate’s Nuclear Meltdown

Today, Majority Leader Harry Reid is threatening to turn the United States Senate into the rough equivalent of the Egyptian parliament under the Muslim Brotherhood.

By exercising the so-called “nuclear option,” he would not only eliminate the filibuster on certain presidential appointees.  He would take a giant step towards eviscerating the rights of the minority in the Senate, and inevitably over time, those of the rest of us.

How bad an idea is this nuclear meltdown? Harry Reid’s Democrats were in the minority when it was previously contemplated.  Sen. Reid said then the filibuster was “the last check in Washington on the complete abuse of power” and that removing it by a simple majority, as he proposes to do today, would be “illegal,” “not fair” and “un-American.”

Harry, don’t go there.
