Last week, over thirty prominent national security practitioners – including influential former legislators and military leaders – urged President Obama to address what is indisputably the most acute danger facing our country today: the vulnerability of our electric grid to enemy attack and to naturally occurring, intense solar storms.

If this most critical of critical infrastructures is damaged or otherwise disrupted for prolonged periods over large parts of the country, millions of us will die because electricity makes possible life for most in 21st Century America. Put another way, without that electric power, life here becomes impossibly hard.

President Obama is now on notice: We are courting disaster if we fail to take practical, cost-effective steps that can, in the immediate future, begin securing our grid. There’s not a minute to waste.
