The U.S. military has long been distinguished by its embrace of values like morality, decency and integrity. Our servicemen and women are expected to exhibit and protect these attributes.

Yet, the culture of our armed forces – like the common defense more generally – has been under siege by the Obama administration. A prime example has been its appalling mistreatment of a revered Green Beret, Sergeant First Class Charles Martland.

During a deployment to Aghanistan, SFC Martland physically intervened with an Afghan officer who had enslaved and serially sexually abused a boy. In Obama’s Army, such conduct was initially treated as grounds for separating Charles Martland from the service.

It is a hopeful sign that, as the President’s term winds down, the Army’s leadership has decided to keep SFC Martland in its ranks – thereby affirming, rather than eroding further, the values he epitomizes.
