With his defeat yesterday in Indiana, Sen. Ted Cruz brought to an end a remarkable presidential bid. As one of his admirers, I am very sorry to see this principled, courageous man leave the race. As an American who believes the country desperately needs a course-correction, especially with respect to the national security, I pray that his vision in that regard will nonetheless prevail.

I had the privilege of being asked to serve as one of the senior national security advisors for the Texas senator’s 2016 campaign. It gave me an opportunity to witness first-hand his inspiring clarity about the threats we are facing, his unwavering commitment to our friends and allies around the world and his determination to restore the common defense.

Our times’ existential threats to freedom require such qualities in our next Commander-in-Chief. We must accept nothing less.
