Candidate Donald Trump promised to withdraw from the Paris climate change accords, citing the fact that, without approval from Congress, foreign bureaucrats will be able to control America’s energy use. He also pledged to cut all taxpayer funding of UN global warming programs.

These commitments are as justified today as ever. Yet, President Trump is now reportedly considering abandoning his promise to cancel the Paris non-treaty. That would be a serious mistake on several grounds:

First, it would perpetuate Barack Obama’s war on coal and other fossil fuels, undermining our energy security and economy. Second, this president must not condone, let alone endorse, his predecessor’s contempt for the Senate’s constitutional role in treaty-making. And third, tax dollars are needed for higher priorities than trying to affect climate change at the margin.

Mr. President, honor your promise.
