Polio is one of the most horrific of diseases.  It leaves unvaccinated children gravely ill, disfigured and, in some cases, dead.

The good news is that, thanks to worldwide public health efforts, polio has been virtually eliminated globally.  Until, that is, recently.

The bad news is that fresh outbreaks are occurring, many of them in developing nations where Islam is dominant.  Apparently, some religious leaders have claimed that polio vaccination programs are an infidel plot to render Muslim women infertile.

Add in the opportunities for the disease to spread during the annual pilgrimage of millions to Mecca and a civil war in Syria and polio may once again become a blight on all humanity. Where are the Muslim leaders condemning this needless nightmare – and leading the charge to prevent it?
