The murderous hostage-taking in Sydney by a jihadist who sought to tie his action to the so-called Islamic State prompted Australia’s Prime Minister to describe the perpetrator as part of a “death cult.”

This cult has another name that even robust politicians like Tony Abbott never use. It’s the one the jihadists themselves invariably employ, though: “Shariah.”

While not all Muslims embrace this ideology, the authorities of the faith do. It inculcates in its adherents the belief that their martyrdom in the process of forcing others, through jihad, to submit to shariah is the surest path to paradise.

We must understand and acknowledge this global jihad movement for what it is: Yes, a death cult, but one embraced, supported and enabled by regimes and groups the world over as shariah.
