Labor Day is one most of us take off. Our agendas tend to involve the last of summer vacation, home barbecues with family, a final visit to the community pool and the like.

We have the luxury of being preoccupied with such pleasures, however, because hundreds of thousands of Americans are on the job.

Some are in our military’s front lines, or elsewhere supporting them.

Some are trying to protect our nation’s borders and interior against terrorists and those who traffic in drugs, weapons and human beings.

Some are doing their best, under increasingly difficult circumstances, to protect our cities from criminal elements.

So, take a moment out of what may be your labor-free holiday to think of, thank or say a prayer for those hard at work on behalf of the rest of us.
