We Need to Make America’s Nuclear Deterrent Great Again

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

President-elect Donald Trump yesterday channeled Ronald Reagan. He declared: “The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes.”

If the world is showing no signs of coming to its senses, it is refreshing to have – at last – a President who is. Basically ever since the Reagan administration, Republicans and Democrats alike have treated our nuclear deterrent with, at best, benign neglect. Barack Obama actually believed he could rid the world of nuclear weapons, starting with ours – and greatly exacerbated our unilateral disarmament.

President Trump will need not only to replace our obsolescing missiles, planes and submarines with modern ones. To achieve the safe, effective and reliable nuclear deterrent we require, he will have to build and test a new generation of weapons to go aboard them, as well.
