National Academies of Science Whitewash Grid Vulnerability

Congress asked the National Academy of Sciences to perform an independent analysis of the vulnerabilities of the U.S. electric grid. What resulted is, to put it charitably, incomplete.

As a critique by the indispensable Foundation for Resilient Societies makes clear, the National Academies failed to evaluate fully present dangers to our most critical of critical infrastructures – and to our country – from sabotage, cyberattacks, electromagnetic pulses or intense solar storms. Consequently, they missed effective corrective actions, too.

A less charitable characterization of such a product would call it a whitewash – seemingly calculated to mislead the public and their elected representatives about the degree to which we are at real risk of a protracted grid-down situation over large parts of the country and, therefore face the prospect of a nation-ending catastrophe.

We need to secure the grid, now, not pretend that it is resilient.
