A massacre at the Mandalay Casino in Las Vegas last night has resulted in the murder of at least fifty concertgoers and the wounding of over one hundred more, picked off by a shooter on the 32nd floor of an adjacent hotel. Authorities have identified the shooter as a local man, Stephen Paddock, but not revealed his apparent motivations.

What is clear, however, is that the United States, like too many other nations, remains vulnerable to acts of mass violence against innocents. They may be perpetrated by individuals seeking nothing more than the instant celebrity that comes with such a notorious act. Others, however, seek to inflict this sort of terrifying mayhem for a cause, especially for the purpose of achieving political outcomes.

Given the difficulty of preventing individual attacks, we must be vigilant about all those incubating adherents to such causes, as well.
