Arms Control’s Abject Failure Won’t be Fixed by More Arms Control

In response to President Trump’s termination of the INF Treaty, critics like former Senator Sam Nunn insist that we need more arms control. Really?

The Kremlin has never honored its arms control commitments. To the contrary, by consistently cheating and otherwise exploiting the United States’ assiduous adherence to all its obligations, Moscow has obtained a decisive strategic advantage.

Moreover, arms control’s anesthetizing effect has helped the Russians completely modernize their nuclear arsenal – including the deployment of several new “doomsday” weapons – while America’s deterrent has gone largely unimproved for decades, rendering it increasingly obsolescent. Yet another arms control deal at this point would simply lock in our dangerous inferiority.

Worse yet, China’s nuclear threat has never been subjected even to the false pretense of arms control limitations. No one but a delusional arms controller would think perpetuating this arrangement will enhance U.S. security.
