The Democrats’ national security justification for impeachment is a big lie

House Democrats increasingly justify the imminent impeachment of Donald Trump on the grounds that he damaged “national security” because he allegedly impeded the flow of U.S. military assistance to Ukraine.

This is a Big Lie. Adolf Hitler and his Nazis used the technique to manipulate public perceptions by insistently repeating “colossal” untruths. 

Ironically, those most prominently perpetrating today’s big lie have historically been strikingly disinterested in national security. Their present passion seems cynically political, not authentic.

While giving Ukraine the wherewithal to defend itself against Russian invaders may not be a national security imperative, it is a good idea. President Trump deserves credit – rather than impeachment – for having repeatedly approved it, whereas his predecessor adamantly refused to do so.

No Democrat is proposing to impeach Barack Obama post-presidency for thus harming the national security. None should use that pretext for impeaching his successor.
